Types of Preventative Dental Treatments
Types of Preventative Dental Treatments

Practicing good oral hygiene habits, eating a balanced diet, and visiting your dentist regularly are all ways to help prevent tooth decay and gum disease. PROFESSIONAL TEETH CLEANING A regular professional teeth cleaning is so important to your oral health. The ADA recommends getting your teeth cleaned professionally at least twice a year, and more often if you have gum disease. During your cleaning appointment, the hygienist will remove plaque buildup from your teeth both above and below the gum line. This helps to keep your teeth and gums healthy and comfortable in between visits! EXAMS AND X-RAYS X-rays are an important part of preventative dentistry, especially for children. They allow us to detect tooth decay early as well as show any infections or abscesses around the root of a tooth. X-rays also allow our dentists to see bone structure and developmental abnormalities such as impacted teeth. X-rays are also helpful in determining the need for braces or other orthodontic treatments. We recommend that children receive their first set of x-rays between the ages of five to seven years old. This allows our dentists to closely monitor the development of their teeth and their surrounding structures. X-rays are also important for adults because over time teeth wear down and fillings may need to be replaced. Early detection of decay allows us to treat it sooner and more conservatively so that it does not compromise the overall dental health of the patient. It is important to have diagnostic dental exams every six months for people of all ages, even if they do not have any symptoms of dental problems. Regular check-ups enable us to catch cavities in their early stages before they require more extensive treatment. After performing a cleaning, we will also perform an oral cancer screening exam to check for any signs of mouth cancer. FLUORIDE TREATMENTS The benefits of fluoride treatments go beyond cavity prevention. Fluoride can help teeth stay strong by preventing cavities, as well as slowing tooth decay and preventing sensitive tooth root surface buildup. It can also reverse early signs of tooth decay by remineralizing areas affected by demineralization. In other words, it can actually help your teeth grow back stronger! One of the primary ways dentists apply fluoride is by using varnish, which is a liquid or gel that is painted on the surfaces of the teeth and has the consistency of nail polish. It’s clear in color and hardens quickly. Once it is applied, patients should avoid eating or drinking to allow the treatment time to set. Patients can also wear lipstick with their treatment so that it will not be seen while they are out in public. Varnishes typically need to be applied twice a year. Besides fluoride varnish, there are other options available such as professional fluoride rinses and gels that can be applied at home. Your dentist may also suggest prescription strength toothpaste with fluoride to further protect your smile from decay and erosion.___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ [Glossary]( Definition Demineralization - Teeth can become more susceptible to decay when minerals are lost from the natural tooth enamel layer due to acidic plaque bacteria. This can leave the teeth vulnerable to acid attacks and erosion. Erosion - When acids come in contact with the dentin layer of a tooth, it can cause the surface of the tooth to be worn down, resulting in small notches in the tooth’s surfaces. This is known as erosion. Enamel - The outermost layer of the visible

Dental Emergencies
Dental Emergencies

A dental emergency is any situation that requires immediate treatment. Dental emergencies can occur at any time, and they are not limited to regular office hours. WHAT IS A DENTAL EMERGENCY? There are several situations that fall under the dental emergency, and while some of these aren’t as serious as other situations, you need to visit your dentist as soon as possible for any kind of oral pain, bleeding, or swelling. Unfortunately, some emergencies are unavoidable. For example, your child might get a tooth knocked out while playing sports. If you experience any of these situations, it’s imperative that you call us right away, so we can begin treating the problem. Some common dental emergencies include... - Severe toothaches that cannot be treated with medication - Injuries to the mouth that lacerations or bleeding - Broken or lost fillings, crowns, or bridges - Abscesses, infections, or other severe pain - Teeth that are pushed out of position - Objects stuck between teeth or in the gums If you are suffering from one of these conditions, it’s important to contact us at your earliest convenience. In many cases, we can treat these conditions the same day that you call. We will work quickly to determine your needs and provide you with the best possible care. KNOCKED OUT TOOTH If your tooth is knocked out, you should recover the tooth and rinse it with water. Then, apply a cold compress to your face to minimize swelling. Finally, see a dentist immediately for an evaluation and treatment recommendations to ensure the greatest chance of successful replantation. The sooner, the better! (Many dentists have emergency hours, making it convenient to get care right away.) If the tooth cannot be replaced in the socket, then the dentist may try implanting it or storing it in milk until you can see your dentist. Your dentist may also recommend over-the-counter medications to reduce pain and swelling. If a tooth has been broken or damaged, rinse your mouth with warm water and then carefully inspect the damage. Apply a cold compress and seek dental treatment as soon as possible to avoid further damage. A knocked-out or broken tooth requires immediate dental care in order to minimize the chances of complications, such as permanent tooth loss, infection, and bone loss. BROKEN OR CHIPPED TOOTH A broken or chipped tooth is never fun to deal with, but in most cases, you can treat it quickly at home and save a trip to the dentist! If your tooth is damaged or chipped, rinse your mouth with salt water to disinfect it and avoid swallowing any pieces. Use gauze to apply pressure to the injured area to stop the bleeding and prevent infection. If a piece of your tooth has broken off, be sure to keep it in a small container of milk until you get it to your dentist right away; putting it in a cup of water or saliva can cause the tooth to die and become unsalvageable! If the chip or crack in your tooth is extensive, or if you have facial swelling or lacerations, you should seek immediate medical attention from an emergency dentist. He or she will be able to repair the damage to your teeth as well as help prevent further injuries from happening. Toothache
Toothache

Toothache is one of the most common dental issues. It can occur due to several reasons. The most common among them are cavities, tooth sensitivity, tooth decay, cracked tooth, and gum disease. WHAT CAUSES TOOTHACHES? A toothache can be caused by many different things, such as tooth decay, gum disease, or a crack in the tooth. Diagnosing and treating your toothache early can help prevent further damage and infection. For example, if your tooth is cracked, bacteria may enter the tooth and cause an infection that requires a root canal. If your tooth is broken at the gumline, bacteria and plaque can build up under the gumline, causing gum disease. Treat these infections as soon as possible to avoid further problems, like tooth loss. Many other causes for toothaches are preventable with regular brushing and flossing. Brushing twice a day helps remove food debris and plaque from your teeth. Flossing once a day removes food and plaque between teeth that your toothbrush can’t reach. For more tips on preventing cavities and gum disease, call [practice name]. Note: This post was originally published in 2016 and was rewritten and updated in 2019. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF TOOTHACHES? There are many different kinds of tooth pain, but the most common types include: - Abscessed tooth pain: This happens when an infection develops in the roots of a tooth or in the gums. An abscessed tooth can be extremely painful, and it can lead to severe swelling in the face as well as fevers. If you experience these symptoms, you’ll need to visit the dentist immediately for treatment. - Broken tooth pain: A broken tooth can feel sharp and painful when you bite down on something. If the damage is minor, your tooth may be sensitive when exposed to hot or cold temperatures as well. If your tooth is broken, you should visit your emergency dentist as soon as possible for evaluation and treatment. - Cracked tooth pain: You may also feel a sharp pain when you bite down on a cracked tooth because the fracture causes the tooth to be extra sensitive to pressure. If left untreated, the crack may spread, causing significant damage to your teeth. In these cases, you may need a crown to repair the damaged tooth. - Sensitive teeth pain: Sensitivity is a sensation of discomfort that occurs when the inner layers of the tooth are exposed to temperature fluctuations such as hot, cold, or even air. Many people with sensitive teeth avoid eating foods that are too hot or too cold and experience pain when they brush their teeth too hard. Sensitive toothpastes can help manage sensitivity and prevent it from worsening over time. In addition to treating the pain you’re experiencing with a toothache, your dentist may also recommend other treatments to prevent further damage to your teeth. We offer general dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, WHAT IS A ROOT CANAL PROCEDURE? A root canal is a dental treatment that removes a tooth’s infected pulp and replaces it with a strengthening filler. The benefit of this treatment is that it saves the tooth from needing to be pulled, which is more expensive and time-consuming than a root canal procedure. Root canal procedures are performed under local anesthesia in order to minimize pain. During the treatment, the decayed tissue is removed from the inside of the tooth, and the area is cleaned thoroughly to prevent infection. The inside of the tooth is then covered with a crown to provide additional support for the outer structure of the tooth. Teeth Whitening and Benefits
Teeth Whitening and Benefits

. COMPARING TEETH WHITENING TO OVER-THE-COUNTER WHITENING PRODUCTS While at-home teeth whitening kits are widely available, they are not a substitute for in-office treatment. Most dentists recommend using an at-home kit along with professional teeth whitening treatments to get the best results. The concentration of the bleaching solution used in the dentist’s office is far higher than what’s available in retail products. Therefore, after using store-bought trays or strips, the patient will still need to come to the office for touch-ups. This can get expensive when adding up the prices from the drugstore and professional treatments. Professional teeth whitening can also produce better results than at-home kits. The gel used in dental office is customized to the patient and their smile. It’s designed to whiten teeth quickly and safely without harming sensitive gums or other oral tissues. HOW PROFESSIONAL-GRADE WHITENING WORKS First, your dentist creates custom bleach trays for you to wear at home. These trays are created from impressions of your teeth for a perfect fit. You will fill the trays with professional-strength gel and then wear them every day while sleeping or for up to two hours each day. The bleaching agent in the gel breaks down stains on your teeth caused by foods, beverages, and even tobacco. In as little as one or two weeks, your stains will noticeably be reduced and your smile will be brighter and whiter. Your dentist may recommend at-home touch-ups every six to nine months to keep your smile looking its best. THE BENEFITS OF PROFESSIONAL WHITENING Professional teeth whitening can provide significant benefits by lightening the shade of your teeth by several shades in just one visit. If you’ve tried over-the-counter whiteners in the past and experienced less-than-desirable results, professional whitening is your best option for getting the best bang for your buck! When you come in for professional teeth whitening, we will create a customized tray for you to take home and use with a professional-strength whitening gel for a daily regimen of treatments to ensure that you get the results you want quickly. This custom fit ensures that the gel stays in place and doesn’t irritate your gums or cheeks the way an ill-fitting store-bought solution may. Our take-home kit also includes desensitizing gel to use as needed after your first treatment in order to minimize any sensitivity you may experience during the procedure.
